Prime Minister the Rt Hon Hubert A Ingraham greet patrons at the Ministry of Tourism’s Abaco Festival Saturday.

Marsh Harbour, Abaco — The Royal Bahamas Defence Force Band ushered in the holiday season in Marsh Harbour with a grand performance at the Ministry of Tourism’s annual Christmas Festival last weekend.

Thousands from throughout the Abaco cays, New Providence, Grand Bahama and Andros packed the BAIC park to participate in the community’s signature Christmas event.

A feast of Abaco cuisine and popular island drinks were laid out before them as they snapped up the array of arts and craft, preserves, plants, and books.

Wesley College Youth Band, the Hope Town Primary School Bell Ringers, Abaco Junior Minister of Tourism Amy Mackey, junkanoo groups and pop bands performed for the festival attendees.

But it was the Defence Force’s precision marching and its performance of popular Bahamian songs that brought the house down late Saturday night.

Dignitaries present included Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Hubert A Ingraham, Member of Parliament for North Abaco; the Hon Edison M Key, Member of Parliament, South Abaco; Minister of the Environment, Dr the Hon Earl Deveaux; Special Projects Officer, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Dr Ann Higgins; Abaco Administrators Cephus Cooper and Benjamin Pinder; and local government officials.

Mr Key and Dr Higgins who represented the Minister of Youth Sports and Culture, turned on the traditional Christmas tree

This Ministry of Tourism event, two years ago, found a home at the site of the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation’s proposed craft centre and farmers market. The size of the event has doubled since then.

We are happy that the Abaco Christmas Festival has found a home here,” said Mr Key, BAIC Executive Chairman. “Other organizations are welcome to host their events here also.

“The site is being properly landscaped and a scenic setting created where vendors can offer their wares and patrons can enjoy them in a clean and safe setting.”

Brenda Sawyer, Chairperson of the Festival Committee, said the event was a success.
