COB student raise concerns over campus security…Class held up by robbers?

Dear BP,

PLEASE shed light on an issue at COB that can never seem to be resolved.

On any given day thugs and jonesers walk freely in and out of the college campus because security officers are inconsistent in performing their duties.

Just today at 4pm a young lady was robbed while outside of an office near the G block. This should not be happening under any circumstances IF the officers would simply do their job and check all persons entering the college campus.

BP we are TIRED!! Something has to be done! Robberies are becoming too frequent on the campus and we (the students) are in fear of our safety and our lives. This should not be happening!!

Not only are the students in fear but lecturers are also in fear of their lives. There was a report about an entire classroom being held up and robbed by thugs and nothing ever came out of it!

When media attention is drawn to a situation then students and lecturers at the college see change.

BP, I beg you, PLEASE help us by bringing attention to this situation.

Signed,

  • When I attended COB back in 2000 it was such a peaceful place. Absolutely no issues I encountered while studying there with the exception of one or two catfights between some girls at that time.

Nowadays, I pray for those young women who have to walk that poorly lit area around the campus. That walk from Blue Hill bus stop near Shell to the main campus is dangerous. I now call it allegator alley because of the thugs who frequent the area, especially where that popular wholesale bar is. The walk from the back of the subdivision around Blue Hill to the rear of the campus is now dangerous.

Plenty thugs live in the surrounding areas, and some of the things that are said to those young ladies by those thugs from passing vehicles are predatory and sexually explicit in nature.

I would continue to encourage those women to walk to campus with a friend. Especially during the holidays fast approaching and this time change.

We all know that the Bahamas is above water with cases of rape. Protect yourselves.

  • BM we are TIRED! its bad that we cant even feel safe in the gates of our own school. It is scary to know that a young girl got robbed in broad daylight in front of the G BLOCK OFFICE with people around..it shows that the people committing these crimes arent afraid because they know there are NO SECURITIES AROUND!something needs to be done about this! i have classes late at night and there are NO securities around! COB really need to do better…this is a serious situation.

  • I AM FED UP WITH COB! THE DAM SECURITY TOLD ME HE IS GOING TO TOW MY CAR OUT THE PARKING LOT BY THE BOOKSTORE. THERE IS A SIGN UP SAYING THAT STUDENTS CANT PARK THERE UNTIL AFTER 4 P.M. THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED AFTER 5 HE COULDNT HAVE BEEN SERIOUS!! THERE IS ALREADY AN ISSUE WITH PARKING ON CAMPUS THEY NEED TO DO SOMTHING ABOUT THAT!

  • This has been an issue for years! When students aren’t being robbed they’re being RAPED! Just recently a female was raped on campus by the T-Block. Have the students been forewarned or advised of this occurrence? NO! Security at COB simply SUCKS! They want to fight actual students instead of keeping out the strays. They so like to portray themselves like they’re policemen but don’t actually DO as such. The students have to protect themselves, plain and simple. Y’all worry!

  • The simple fact that the college is entirely surrounded by ghetto areas should be reason enough to have adequate and reliable security protecting our future leaders. This makes me think twice about sending my kids to our own local college because as much as I want them to get a good college education, I also want them to be safe while getting one.

    • Some of the best schools in the world are surrounded by ghetto or more urban areas. Thing is the have adequate effective security, the problem isn’t the location of COB, but IMO crooked security officers who are in on the car thefts and other robberies that go down at COB. Next thing is the ones who aren’t crooked are lazy and inconsistent in performing their duties, sometimes they ask students to show their ID before they enter the campus and sometimes they don’t. Also anybody could slip in through the exit gate that’s directly opposite where City Market used to be, when a car comes through there because there are never no security there. It really is a depressing and dangerous situation!

  • While security remains a grave concern at C.O.B., students often contribute to the security problem by inviting their non-C.O.B. friends to the campus and divulging the security loop-holes so that these friends can gain access to the campus. Safety must be a priority at C.O.B. and it must be a collective effort between students, security staff, administration and faculty.

  • This is so true. Security officers rather fighting and harassing students for silly reasons when they fail to fight and harass trespassers of the COB campus who come in and have the freedom to engage themselves in mischief!! We the students of COB are not safe within our own learning facility and it shows how we cant even separate the criminals from those who are trying to become successful and positive contributors to this country!!!

    • It is known that thug security company and officers plan these set up robberies and car break-ins. In all cases a security officer is never at their post when these robberies takes place. Matters are always brought to the officials attentions but like everything in the Bahamas it is either ignored or we let it die. These are our children and teachers. At least can extend ourselves and help them.
