Nassau, Bahamas — Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) employees took up a collection totaling $6,800 for the Bahamas Red Cross to transport water to Haiti.
Caroline Turnquest, Director General, The Bahamas Red Cross Society thanked the employees and explained how the donation would be used at a press conference, Thursday, January 28.
“Collecting items is one thing, but getting them there is another expense. This donation will help defray the costs of transporting water into Port-Au-Prince,” she said.
The Red Cross’ disaster management team is currently on the ground in Haiti with assistance pulled from various countries, Ms Turnquest explained.
“They are in place for such a time as this, and assessing the rescue and recovery efforts, survivor and victim trauma cases, as well as other medical needs they have.”
Mynez Sherman, WSC Employee Relations Manager said, “I can say the WSC employees are a compassionate group and we did the same for Freeport when it was damaged by the hurricane.
She noted that the average donation was about $15 each, but there were persons who may have donated more.
“We felt for the people in Haiti,” Ms Sherman said. “We knew our barge could not do it; we saw the need to take up some funds.”
“This is a long term situation for Haiti and as things develop, we will see how else we can help,” she added.
