Nassau, Bahamas — The Ministry of Public Works and Transport is seeking to reduce transport costs for road users by providing a more “rational” and “efficient” transport system for New Providence.
Minister Neko C Grant announced plans for the construction phase of road works at Robinson Road and East Street on Wednesday.
“The objective of the new system will be met by improving the existing road network, modernizing and strengthening the institutional framework responsible for the provision of transportation services, improving road safety, improving public transportation and alleviating the negative environmental impacts associated with the existing traffic congestion levels,” Mr Grant said.
Nicole Campbell, Permanent Secretary; George Hutchinson, Deputy Director; engineers from the Project Execution Unit and representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank were also in attendance.
Mr Grant acknowledged that the Ministry of Works has and will continue to encounter “challenges” during the remaining phase of the construction.
“However, through the continued efforts of my Ministry, the Project Execution Unit, the Consultants and the Contractor, we encourage you to bear with us as we work towards better roads on this island,” he added.
Mr Grant urged motorists to drive “safely,” “sensibly” and to obey the temporary traffic management signage in place.
“Take care when approaching the construction zone especially in the areas of schools and pedestrian crossings.
“Let us all exercise good judgment, practice safe driving and obey the law as my Ministry will do its best to keep the public informed at every stage of the project.”
The first phase of the road works for Robinson Road (between Marathon Road and Baillou Hill Road) will begin at the Claridge/Robinson Road intersection up to Mollie Street to undertake the required work to water and sewer lines.
The improvements include widening on both sides of the existing road, upgrading the two major intersections at Marathon and Robinson Roads, the Independence Highway and East Street and Robinson Road.
Mr Grant said the existing two-lane road would be upgraded to a four-lane roadway at selected locations and from two lanes to a three-lane roadway at other locations.
Additional improvements include better street lighting, road pavement, upgrade and extension of existing utilities, and installation of utility ducts for future use for the Bahamas Electricity Corporation, BTC and Cable.
Work on the corridor at East Street/Robinson Road (heading south) will begin on April 26 and is expected to be completed in six months.
The improvements include widening of the existing two-lane carriageway to a four-lane carriageway between Robinson Road and Soldier Road, widening on both sides of the existing road, improved road pavement and street lighting.
Mr Grant said the existing roundabout would remain at the Independence Highway junction.
He pointed out that the improvements would also include installation of utility ducts for future use for Bahamas Electricity Corporation, BTC and Cable, an improved signalized junction at East Street and Soldier Road, and installation of a drainage system, sidewalks and signage.
