A resident walk the beach on Windermere Island on Eleuthera. Eleuthera’s economy is left in a depressed state as 29 workers of Windermere Island resorts were terminated from the property over the weekend.

Eleuthera, Bahamas: Just hours after the Prime Minister’s speech to world leaders where he told them the Bahamian economy is strong, and his Minister of Labour simultaneously begged employers in the country to keep workers hired, Windermere Island Resort developers on the island of Eleuthera has buckled to the global tremors and terminated 29 workers over the weekend.

Bahamas Press has learned that the resort which caters to British royals is feeling a hard hit with a depressed economy on the island and had no other choice but make the decision, and terminate the services of its workers.

A terminated worker now out of a job said, “we have just received our letters this weekend and I guess that’s it. I love the place, but I guess it is what it is.”  Feeling shocked and lost for words another former employee said, “there is no job on the island already and for me to now loose my own hurts hard, as I am the only bread winner in my family.”

The terminations, layoff and workday reductions in the hotel sector is at record-breaking numbers across the country this season, with almost every resort in the country affected by the economic downturn.

Bahamas Press has learned that the economic crunch has already taken affect at hotels and resorts from the Abaco Club in the north to Atlantis on Paradise Island. And from Bimini Bay to Four Seasons in Exuma all reported to have released staff and are operating with low record-breaking occupancy levels.
