KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCILS in New Providence met recently with new District Deputy Greg Christie to plan the new Knights year for District 66 – The Bahamas. On hand were Grand Knights Kenneth Kelly, (Council 10415) and Keith Roberts (Council 11755), together with District officers John Davis and Sherman Armbrister, and Faithful Navigator of the Bishop Paul Leonard Assembly, Alpheus Ramsey.

Freeport, Grand Bahama – The Bahamas District #66, Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service organization named for the voyager, Christopher Columbus, began its new year with a meeting of two of the four Councils in The Bahama and the new District Deputy.

Councils 11755 and 10415 of New Providence met with new District Deputy Gregory S. Christie at St. Augustine’s College campus recently and address plans for the ensuing year. A similar meeting has been held with Council 10647 in Freeport and another is planned for Council 12692 in North Eleuthera.

Christie served as Grand Knight of the Grand Bahama Council 10647 until taking up his new position in July succeeding Earl Thompson. Succeeding him as Grand Knight is Arnold Neely. Councils in Nassau are headed by Grand Knight Kenneth Kelly, (Nassau Council 10415), and Grand Knight Keith Roberts, (West Nassau Council 11755). North Eleuthera Council 12692 is headed by Grand Knight Edison Rolle.

“Our initial meeting was very insightful as it gave me an opportunity to learn of the concerns of the members in New Providence, and together we have committed ourselves to addressing those concerns and those of our respective parishes as indicated by the priests of the parishes.

“As Knight we’re committed to working in concert with our priests and the parishes while at the same time implementing programmes for the youth communities of our parishes,” said Mr. Christie.

“One of the concerns noted was the need to for us refocused our efforts to build an endowment, which will one day provide a steady source of funding for the Order’s charitable projects. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men’s fraternal benefit society that was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, and if and where possible, public relief works.

“We will again launch a return to our initiative of again establishing an unrestricted endowment fund to support the long-term charitable goals of the Order, under the theme: United in Charity”.

The new District Deputy said that one of the immediate annual projects of the organization is assistance with the Annual Catholic Spelling Bee competition, and the sponsorship of select winners to the Florida Spelling Bee competition where students from Catholic Schools in The Bahamas have done exceptionally well in recent years.

“Additionally our Councils are looking at involving students in a Florida Knights of Columbus Basketball Shootout early next year,” said the Deputy.

The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to more than 13,000 councils and 1.7 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, The Bahamas, the
Virgin Islands, Guatemala, Guam St. Lucia, and Saipan.

The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world’s foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programmes, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities.
