THE Government broke ground on the first two phases of the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre redevelopment project yesterday.
The works will serve to facilitate the commissioning of the new national stadium set for completion this summer.
Speaking at the ceremony yesterday, Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham explained that the redevelopment was “hastened” as the stadium works, gifted by the Chinese government, did not include utilities, parking and road access.
“The completion of all phases of the redevelopment of the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre is likely to take many years,” Mr Ingraham said. “Today, we begin two Phases of a five Phase overall Development Plan. These Phases of the redevelopment works are essential to make operational and useable the new Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium – now scheduled for completion in June.”
At a cost of $48.5 million, the contract was awarded to Bahamas Hot Mix Co Ltd and Bahamas Marine Construction, which submitted their winning bid under a joint venture partnership. The winning bid was said to be 5 per cent below the engineer’s estimate for construction.
Mr Ingraham said: “The phases will result in enhanced entrance with parks and open green spaces leading from Thompson Blvd to the Sports Centre which will be linked to the Tonique Williams-Darling Highway along an enhanced Yellow Elder Way; a new road extending from a new round-about at the Government High School that will link the QE Sport Centre with the New Providence Highway now referred to as Bethel Avenue.
“An extension of Moss Road will link Thompson Blvd and Blue Hill Road, while a new connector road will link Moss Road to the round-about at the Government High School,” he added.
The new road works, promised to have little to no impact on the present flow of traffic, will also establish new parking areas, drainage systems, and landscaping throughout the area.
Mr Ingraham said: “These works will not only complement the operations of the new National Stadium and augment the development of the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre, they will also contribute to my government’s goal of transforming the landscape of New Providence and providing residents and visitors with modern and reliable infrastructure and utility services.
“It should not be lost on any of us that enhanced sporting facilities hold considerable potential for other and additional benefits to our country, namely the growth in sports tourism; potential new revenue sources to the benefit of sport and the increased opportunities for additional sports development.”
Sound like yinner mad!
Well you shouldn’t have voted for the Foreign National movement cause they told all yinner what they gan do from the very beginning!
Ya getting another chance real soon!!!!
I look forward to seeing if Bahamians will wake up. It is my belief that one more term with the FNM will lead us all to hell if we don’t pray.
Wake up Bahamians; look, and see what this heartless government is doing to us, and for us. They are victimizing us, leaving us without proper jobs to provide for our families, and bringing in foreigners to enjoy opportunities that should be awarded to BAHAMIANS.
They are doing nothing for us but reducing us to levels never seen or heard of. Is this the government we want to carry us forward? They want it all for themselves – “HOGS”! We are just giving them the opportunity to get it by giving them our vote.
Speak up Bahamas. Let us not be fooled again by this FNM government. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me!
PUT YOUR BID IN AND SHUT THE HELL UP!!
HOGS!
well let see you spend thousands of dollars to educate your children when they finish college.but they have to then work for one of the FNM OR PLP cronies.we have over 1 billion dollars worth of capital works going on in this country right now when are we the masses or black majority going to get a piece of this pie.i want my people to be able to eat steak and lobster too.
BP you just look them men smiling from ear to ear. The reality is far too many Bahamians have no jobs to smile about. What could the Chinese government give members of this cabinet that already have more than they could ever spend in their lifetime? What about a new on the market $6000 luxury automatic Toto Automatic Toilet and I’m pretty sure that would have no trouble getting one of their FNM contractor buddies to installed the toilet for them. The Neorest 550 toilet is a high-end combination of ecology and luxury, and features an automatic lid, a night light, three washing modes, an integrated warm air dryer, hands free auto flush and air purifying system. With their $6000 toilet they don’t even have to wipe the BS off as it comes out. The luxury toilet going do all the wiping automatically for them spoiled cabinet members. They will be so happy to get one for their personal bathrooms because it reminds them of the toilet on that 16-seater luxury helicopter they and the Papa so like to fly on for free. Nothing but the best for our FNM cabinet?

At least the FNM government could throw a bone here or there at other contractors to make it look a little fair, but what your seeing now is rank, raw, in your face, we dont care what you think political patronage!
BP what do you expect? If you can gun down an innocent man on the street, sit down in the TV room at CID, while they call your Pa, run away to a foreign country then come back to the Bahamas and face no charges; the Bahamas belongs to you. That happened under the FNM as well!
@Michael J.Brown
This story of the contractors son still makes my blood boil as any black man jogging that day could have been killed by the son.Remember now the killing took place quite a distance from the breakin so every person of colour must be concerned.Am convinced that Papa believes he can do anything in this country and get away with it as the press on the whole is compromised.I just hope that persons are hired to keep the bathroom tidy and hygienic for visitors and natives alike as anything causing that kind of money must be must be maintained..
A Trucking company “the HOG” (Bahamas Hot Mix) has won most of the large government construction contracts. What does a Trucking company know about utility and roadway infrastructure? Isn’t that something to be headed by Civil and Geotechnical Engineers? What does a Trucking company know about Building construction? Isn’t that something to be handled by Architects and Structural Engineers???
We need Chanage, it’s a joint partnership. Bahamas Hot Mix will be completing the road work and the other company will be completing the installation of the utility and infrastructure. Why don’t Bahamians just simply read before making such immature and uneducated comments!
HOGS are correct. These people gat papa by a string. I watched the news tonight and was glad to see a new contractors association was formed by
Meadows to counteract this ****. enough is enough. people them broke and bused on the streets and they getting all kinda friggin millions to stuff themselves.
