Nassau, Bahamas — If what we at BP know pans out, the Minister for Works and the Director of Works, who sits as invisible as a ghost, will be in a whole heap a ‘doodo’.
Sources in the Ministry of Works tell us engineer and public relations representative for the New Providence Road Improvement and Infrastructure Project, Charlene Collie, has formally tendered her resignation with the MOW effective June 17th, 2011.
The shocking bombshell has left officials in the department in a daze and have left senior management as high up as the Cabinet, scrambling for a replacement.
Sources in the position to know tell us, “Ms Collie, has had enough of the rough and tumble blame game rolling into her office on a daily basis, associated with the Road Improvement Project. Many suggest, it is the Director of Works, who is confused with the work being carried out and while he pressures Collie he stressed by high-ups in the Cabinet.
“Just how we can all see the construction is one big mess and a ball a confusion for motorists, the same exist within the Ministry of Works.
“Every Man and his ‘mah’ at the top of that ministry should be fired for the poor management of the road works. How could you dig up a main artery like East Street and leave it idle for almost one solid year? Papa should FIRE the Minister, the Director and every senior officer in the Ministry of Works!
“They collectively have delivered great stress to the people of the Bahamas and have terribly managed the Project,” the source said.
In her letter, filled with tones of frustration and stress, Collie, we are told, advised the ministry of her leave some three weeks ago; forcing officials in the department to coach the government employee to stay on in order to avoid further delays and frustration with the botch roadworks.
Sources tell us, up to the ninth hour officials within the ministry were still at it, trying to convince Collie to stay on, advising her that contributions to the upgrading of the new road network were vast. Up to press time we had not received word stating if Ms Collie had rescinded her letter, which took effect yesterday [Saturday].
The road project has been a bone of contention with motorists, riddled with massive construction delays and unannounced lengthy road closures across New Providence.
While part time road works are being carried out on Prince Charles Drive, the main artery to the east, in downtown Nassau work crews are digging trenches only in the early morning hours; Meanwhile other corridors suffer with no construction activity for weeks at a time.
Just this week Collie was seen advising motorists of scores of expected road closure beginning Monday, June 20th in the left lane of Baillou Hill Road South near to Family Guardian.
Not a pin drop could be heard from the Minister or the government employee at the centre of these developments. And to many within the department, Collies shocking resignation come as a great surprise.
I have never met Ms. Collie but every time I saw her on TV my chest swelled with pride. As a young beautiful Bahamian professional woman in a man’s world you made us so proud. Hold yur head up because you handled yourself pofessionally and always remember that “It is only at the tree loaded with fruit that men throw stones” or in Bahamian ” DOGS DO NOT BARK AT PARKED CARS”. ” Small thoughts come from small minds and small pants fit small behinds.

In our beautiful little country it is so sad that we cannot appreciate gems like ms.collie. This lady could have stayed abroad and earn mega bucks, instead she returned home to assist in the growth and development of her country. Its obvious that the hidden powers were trying to make this young lady the sacrificial SCAPEGOAT. These road works will cause the sitting government the election, I have no doubts about that.

What really irks me is that the government had the audacity to increase the fees for inspection and licensing. We already drive on roads that are a far cry from being vehicle friendly and then they turn around digging up and closing off roads making one BIG mess and inconveniencing the motoring populace.
I am not saying that there won’t be inconveniences in getting the roads completed but if you want to charge us astronomical fees, then fix the roads FIRST and also keep in mind that there are people out here who can barely make ends meet so your fees need not be so exorbitant.

As a Bahamian, it saddens me to see that we have not yet learned how to appreciate our own people. The implementation of this project has been beyond poor!
Its clear that a project of this size should span at least 5yrs but Mr Ingraham is trying to complete it in 3yrs!
Had this been done properly so many of the major roads wouldnt have been closed down, dug up, and left incomplete for so long like this!
Think about the amount of business that has suffered needlessly and closed because of these road works!
I can only imagine the blame game that is going on behind close doors in the Ministry of Works? I am glad she got out before they pinned this debacle on her as it was clear they were already trying to make her the face of this project!
