Clarence Town, Long Island — The soon to be fired outgoing Free National Movement government jetted a team into a family island over the weekend all to find supporters on Long Island have gone cold. If Saturday’s showing at the Clarence Town Community Centre meant anything the FNM is set to lose Long Island.
Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham joined party faithful in a special honouree exercise to rally the base for the upcoming general elections. What was shocking, however, was the fact that the room was half empty? Less than 35 residents attended and some being honoured never showed up at the door.
“The turnout was so poor and embarrassing, papa looked disturbed the entire night. Not a young person showed up at the event, and Larry Cartwright appeared disappointed.
“We could not believe the event was a no show on the island where there is little to do. Many people are so disillusioned with the governing FNM, and we have heard the same in Abaco and in North Eleuthera. However, to see it here first hand on Long Island proves a national tidal wave is set to sweep the FNM out of office,” a Long Islander said.
While the party faithful on Long Island sat in disappointment, PLP candidate for the area, Alex Storr, appears to have taken off by storm as he met islanders. Storr we are told is more visible then the island’s MP and is winning major support among local residents.
One senior PLP said as he made a second sweep in the community over the weekend, “The talk in North Eleuthera is, ‘we are going with Clay all the way’! The entire community of Long Island is making the change away from the FNM. Everywhere you turn in this country people have had it with the governing party. Here in Long Island all we hear them say, ‘….WE GA WIN FOR SURE WITH STORR!”
To tell you truth i am fed up, with both political paties, PLP and FNM. I believe there are others who are fed up with both parties too. Election come time and again and we still see these old faces. I’m tired of the same old same old. There needs to be a change. We need to see NEW faces,NEW change and New Party. We need to see a change not only physical but also spiritual, in this country that we call The Bahamas. The thing that is happening in our country today is that the leaders are to busy being caught in what happening around them , and not spending time seeking the face of God. The bible says, If my people which are called by My name(God) should humble themselves, pray seek God’s face and TURN from their wicked ways then the Lord will hear them ,He would forgive their sins and heal their land. I am a true bahamian, born here and live here, i truly can say there’s a lot of wickedness in this land, and this land is sick; but we do have some righteous people, who just don’t talk it but they live it. Unless the people of this land turn back to God, their will be no better, only Jesus could make it better.AMEN!!!
Well BP, I attended the event, and it wasn’t as poorly attended as you state. There were some empty seats, no doubt about it, but the event went very well. Not all the persons who were suppose to get their awards were there, but they sent a representative instead.Only one persons wasn’t there and I was surprise that he wasn’t there seeing that he has always been a big FNM supporter. He did come by earlier, but didn’t stay. He showed his face to the door then left. But overall the event went well with lots of laughter and Papa seemed to have enjoyed himself and shook hands with everybody at the door who attended. But I am sure they were expecting a better turn out as I was also and yes you are right, the lack of young people attending was evident. Just a handful of young people and most of them were the caterers. This will be an interesting election for sure!!!!!

I am from Long Island and visited there recently. The feeling among most of the people I spoke with both young and old (FNM’s and PLP’s)are that they will not vote for Mr. Cartwright again. The FNM’s say that they prefer not to vote than to vote for Mr. Cartwright again and they will not vote PLP. There is nothing much going on there. I remember when the island was thriving with every settlement had a primary school with lots of students. Now the number or primary schools are down to half of what it used to be. This is due mostly to the fact that as the young people leave to attend college they don’t go back because there is no kind of employment. Long Island has lots of potential and they (including me) fell that Mr. Cartwright (being from there) should and could have done more for the island. Mr. Storr is facing an uphill battle there, but I wish him and all the other candidates the best. We are Bahamiams first and in the next election we should do what we think is best for all Bahamians. BP you need to stop misleading the bahamian public . i attended that banquet on saturday and it was not a FLOP as you put it , actually it was GREAT and i dont know where you got your information from about only 35 persons attending .there was some 28 honourees and most of them were there including the ones from ragged island .get your facts together before you open your mouth .publish your pictures.
The picture posted by another apologists online has no more than 30 people, show us different. the event was a pure scrap gang.

Here is the real low-down on Long Island:
Larry Cartwright was always well-loved as a teacher and principal. However, he lost support when he immediately switched from Independent to FNM. He lost further support by putting all his focus into being the Minister of Agriculture. No one will deny that he is very visible in that capacity, but not for Long Island’s farmers. On the same note, he has sat by and watched fishing, a primary industry for the island, be taken away as a viable means of income. So of course Long Islanders are tired of once again being ignored and mistreated.
FNM LONG ISLANDERS WILL PREFER NOT TO VOTE
Alex Storr comes from a good and popular family. He has the dollars and contacts to make things happen. However, he is aligned with the PLP as a real “party man” and anyone who knows about Long Island knows they are not only historically pro-FNM but also anti-PLP. Briefly, this was due to outright sabotage of south Long Island by SLOP’s regieme and bags of nothing during the second PLP reign.
THERE ARE FEW LONG ISLAND PLPs AND FNM LONG ISLANDERS WILL LIKELY CHOOSE NOT TO VOTE THAN TO VOTE PLP
The DNA (to date) has not declared a candidate for Long Island. If they do, and they pick well, they do stand a chance at getting some support. Long Islanders prefer to be independent and not so much government-reliant as the rest of the country, but this small community cannot withstand outright persecution, destruction of local industry such as fishing and there is a severe lack of opportunity on the island. If the DNA comes with a plan, and with a sensible, capable person who can be trusted to carry it out, then at this time they do stand a chance in Long Island.
FNM LONG ISLANDERS WOULD VOTE DNA IF THEY ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THE CANDIDATE AND AGREE TO ACTUALLY GO THE POLLS
Any Independent candidate coming in right now has a long road ahead of them. Without party support or immediate popularity, they will have to convince the islanders that they intend to work for the island and produce results almost immediately. FNM MP Larry Cartwright left a bad taste in the mouth of PLPs and others who voted Independent only to see Larry cross over to the FNM. Most Long Islanders think that Larry Cartwright cares more about being the Minister of Agriculture than a representative for the island. To add further insult to injury, Long Island has a viable farming community but gets no attention from the FNM.
AN INDEPENDENT STANDS A BETTER CHANCE THAN THE PLP, BUT WILL HAVE TO BE A TRULY STELLAR CANDIDATE.
What can the DNA do for Long Island that the FNM could not. They are both cut from the same clothe. When Long Island was being neglected by the FNM for the last four years Branville McCartney was with them.He wants to get back at Hubert Ingraham. Alex Storr has been dialoging with the people of this Island for the last two years and he is interested in helping Long Island residents. That’s more than I could say about lazy Larry. Long Island will be sure and vote for Storr. If you don’t live on Long Island shut up!
I have lived in the Bahamas now since birth for 40 years, born to Bahamians, raised by faithful parents and trained by such as well. They have fallen asleep in death and here I am reading the same foolishness from Bahamians i read all the years i have been here. I am ashamed to be known as a Bahamian, for the people here show so much concern for what government is going to lead and how this one is better than that one. Bahamian people, though, lack basic skills to deal with each other much less elect governments. The attitudes prevalent in this country among the majority of Bahamians is one of lack of concern for neighbor, lack of love for family members and neighborhoods, they are all concerned with themselves and what each one can get for “me”. You talk about what party will be better for the Bahamas, but what you dont realise is people make a place, and if people dont act properly, or train children properly to fear God, to control their language, control their anger and teach respect for young and old alike, then no government will ever fix a thing. Bahamians have accepted and nurtured a culture of violence, foul language, adultery, homosexuality, drug abuse and alcoholism. When pastors, reverends and church members use attendance as a means to sweetheart or say they put their time in with God on one Sunday a month, when the speaker doesnt really use the Bible, but talks in riddles about why tithing is necessary, there is no hope for any country that operates like that, not the Bahamas not anywhere. The bible spoke well when it says” Man has dominated man to his injury” and in “the last days the love of the greater number would cool off”. A truer statement there never was. Bahamians have a form of goldy devotion but are proving false to its power and are hypocritical. I am leaving this country come January, as it has become a dangerous place to survive and a lackluster environment for my family and my four children. I am not knocking the beauty of the Bahamas islands themselves, for what God made is beautiful, but the people who inhabit the place have set a failing standard and are effecting Bahamians who actually want to live right and happy.

This FNM cabinet’s problems are much wider than just Long Island. Most Bahamians understand that it is said that the poor will always be with us, regardless if there is a FNM, PLP or even with the remote possibility of an DNA minority government, but what is confusing is how many poor should there be under this FNM government?
Truth is there are more poor Bahamians under this FNM cabinet since 2007. than at any time in our nation’s history.
Reality is that under this FNM cabinet we Bahamians have become more unequal than the 100,000 Haitians scattered throughout our Bahamaland.
There is no denying that since this FNM cabinet was returned to power in 2007, poverty is on the increase.
If we want to be honest, then we must admit that the middle class is becoming the new poor.
The FNM can never do anything good by the BP, any chance you guys get to use this web site to bash this government you do.

I have voted FNM all my life including the time Larry beat Jimmy as an independent. Larry will get exactly what Jimmy got in 2002 if the DNA sends a good candidate. Larry has been the worst MP in the history of Long Island and we cannot do and worse. He does not have the interest of the people at heart and routinely insults people anytime they asks him a question relating to his job and the welfare of the island. More than 2/3 of the FNM’s will not vote for him and are just waiting to see who the DNA sends. LARRY CARTWRIGHT IS A COMPLETE FAILURE AND NEVER SHOULD HAVE ENTERED POLTICS, he is the biggest let down to Long Island and the FNM.
It is SO Amazing that BP is all in the FNM business but they Failed to mention how the PLP had events with LITTLE or NO Showing during their ISLAND tour…WHAT IS also interesting is their “EASTERN CONCLAVE” had more people from the INNER CITY who were bused in and the crowd had folks in the majority age range of 55-78…COME ON number dont mean SUBSTANCE…I PREFER QUALITY over QUANTITY ANY DAY…THIS IS Evident during the 2007 elections where the crowds at BOTH rallies were SUPERB but IT WAS A CLEAR Win for the FNM…THINKS that make you do what BP seems to NOT do…T…H…I…N…K!
