2nd Annual Anatol Rogers Memorial Lecture

NASSAU, Bahamas – Director of the Institute of Caribbean Studies at the University of the West Indies (Mona) Dr. Carolyn Cooper will lecture at the 2 nd Annual Anatol Rogers Memorial Lecture, the College of the Bahamas announced on November 5.

The event will be held at Choices Training Restaurant, Bahamas Tourism Training Centre, Thompson Boulevard on November 8, 2007 at 7 p.m.  Dr. Cooper will speak on the topic “‘No Matter Where You Come From’: Pan-Africanist Consciousness in the Caribbean Popular Culture.”   She also published two books entitled “Sound Clash – Jamaican Dancehall Culture at Large” and “Noises in Blood: Orality, Gender and the ‘Vulgar’ Body of Jamaican Popular Culture.”   Dr. Cooper also spoke last weekend at Yale University on the topic of dancehall music as part of the institution’s celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.   Pictured from left with a copy of “Sound Clash” are Assistant Professor at the COB School of English Studies Marie Sairsingh-Mills, Chairperson of the School of English Studies Dr. Marjorie Brooks-Jones and School of English Studies lecturer Ivy Huggins, a former student of Dr. Cooper.   (BIS photo: Patrick Hanna)
