St. Michaels, Barbados– Celebrations are ringing out early this morning across the island of Barbados as the country thrust its Democratic Labour Party government headed by Prime Minister Freundel Stuart back into power. The final unofficial count was 16 – 14 seats.
PM Stuart was appointed Prime Minister following the death of Hon. David Thompson in 2010. The then 48 year-old leader of the DLP had ousted the long serving BLP Party headed by former Prime Minister Owen Arthur.
Events leading into the elections suggested that the race was too close to call, however after a strong fight and steady push, hundreds more had opted to remain with PM Stuart’s direction over the past and tired Hubert Ingraham friend Owen Arthur and his BLP.
Barbadians were irate when on every corner – just like in Ingraham campaign – they saw huge billboards with the face of the disgraced Arthur who had vanished after being beaten by Thompson, then from nowhere – banking on the global downturn – returned to the leadership of the BLP.
The formula is not working anymore and observers believe high-tech digital technology, Facebook/Twitter has developed a better-informed electorate who are no longer buying the bull rap from the printed rags of the region.
The election is a clear indication to operators of the FNM who tell us, “This reminds us of the defeat of former Prime Minister Sir Lynden Pindling back in 1997. He could not buy a win during that election. What is clear in this is that the Ingraham camp in the FNM – taking a snapshot of history and tonight’s example in Barbados -should note that we have a far better informed electorate who are not buying into the rhetoric spun in the media and on the talk shows any more. The game has changed and it would be wise for us if we want to be in the game into the future – we must make certain we present new players to the Bahamian electors.”
Barbados returns its GOLD RUSH DLP Government back into power with a new mandate, and for a second time sent Hubert Ingraham’s regional friend Owen Arthur into retirement.
