Former Top Cop suddenly dies at home!

Christopher McCoy

Nassau, Bahamas — Bahamas Press tonight joins officers and family of former senior officer Christopher McCoy who suddenly passed away at his home shortly after 5pm today.

Well-wishers are already pouring into the family home and many are celebrating the decorated officer who was one of the finest produced by the Force.

It was back in July 1 2008, when we at Bahamas Press reported sweeping changes were about to take place on the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham, taking a political stance, had decided to weed out anyone looking like a PLP.

In was in that article we announced that Christopher McCoy was set to be shipped out to head Road Traffic Department of the Police Force as Ingraham’s choice for Deputy Commissioner was Marvin Dames.

Ingraham had become weary of the growing vexing crime problem and by that time he was also ready to make the decision to kick Reginald Ferguson out the window and ax decent law officers who knew the job well. A few month later and McCoy was out the door and had given up his career as a policeman due to the naked politicization of the police.

Many officers were similarly treated back during that dark period and all we can say is this was sad.

Mr. Christopher McCoy started his career with the Royal Bahamas Police Force in 1970.

He was trained in all aspects of security services. In 1984 he participated in a security and intelligence course in Jamaica, in 1988 a drug investigations course in Nassau and an Inspector’s Management Development course in Wakefield England in 1990.

In 2002 and 2006, he expanded his certification by attending an International Command Course and a Strategic Management Course respectively in Bramshill, England. Later, in 2007, he attended an Interpol Conference, which was held in Morocco.

Mr. McCoy also received the Emeritus Police Medal in 1995 and the Queen Police Medal (QPM) in 2008.

During his tenure on the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Mr. McCoy rose through the ranks to become Assistant Superintendant of Police with responsibility for Abaco and Internal Security from 1995-2002. From 2002-2007, he was Chief Superintendant of Police.

In 2007 Mr. McCoy became the Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibly for Intel and Family Islands. He was then demoted by Hubert Ingraham to head Road Traffic.

In 2009, he retired from the force with the rank of Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police. Mr. McCoy joined ICS in 2010 as a Managing Consultant.

May he rest in peace.
