Students learn skills at PureSilk Bahamas LPGA Classic

    PARADISE ISLAND, The Bahamas – The Ministry of Tourism facilitated about 90 students in a Junior Golf Clinic at the 2014 PureSilk-Bahamas LPGA Classic at the Ocean Club Golf Course, Paradise Island on Monday, January 20, 2014.

    The students from schools throughout New Providence interacted with golf pros including Jennifer Song, Symetra Tour Alumnae; Kris Tamulis, also Symetra Tour Alumnae and Georgette Rolle, two-time Bahamas National Women’s Amateur Champion and LPGA Teaching Professional.

    In two separate sessions, the students were taught the basics of gripping the club, how tightly to hold the club, how to place the club in the lead-hand grip and how to place the club, proper posture, fundamentals of the golf swing and other techniques.

    The pros fielded questions from the students regarding their golfing careers, education and lifestyles. The general message was hard work, pays off.

    “Golf has become a large part of my life, so it matters. I love it so much and that’s what makes it so important,” said Rolle, who has been playing for 21 years starting at the age of seven.

    Samantha Cartwright of the Training and Education Unit of the Ministry of Tourism said an invitation was sent out to schools inviting students who were interested in golf to attend the clinic. Subsequently, two students from each school were chosen to participate.

    Earlier, Greg Rolle, Director of Sports Tourism at the Ministry of Tourism said The Bahamas was pleased to work with LPGA and its affiliates in bringing the PureSilk Bahamas Classic back this year.

    He said the Ministry of Tourism regarded it as one of the “high profile” events where The Bahamas will get recognition as a competitive destination for sports tourism.

    Billed as a star-studded event, approximately 108 players will compete on the 72-hole famed Ocean Club Golf Course over four days for a chance to win $195,000. It is the second time the Ocean Club is hosting the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic, which ends Sunday, January 26, 2014.
