Nassau, Bahamas — Bahamas Press is reporting the passing of Joan Thompson, the founding president of the Nassau Institute and wife of the late Chester Thompson.

Joan passed away quietly at her home last Saturday, Sept. 5th, 2015.

Joan was a Canadian by birth. She met the former island Commissioner Chester while at the University of Toronto in 1950 where she studied the Arts. She was an accomplished pianist and was fascinated about the world of economics.

In 1960 she began her journey as an entrepreneur and opened the Brass and Leather Shop which expanded locations in Nassau and Marsh Harbour.

Joan was a Libertarian, holding the view of individual liberties and personal responsibilities, and, so, in 1995, her passions saw her become the founding president of the Nassau Institute in 1995.

She was compassionate and caring, holding a human touch for mankind. In her early life as a young mother she cared for and nurtured three beautiful daughters Juliana, Jennifer [deceased] and Christina.

Bahamas Press offers our deepest condolences to members of Joan’s family in this time of bereavement.
