NASSAU, The Bahamas – Paulette Brown, first black female president of the American Bar Association (ABA), made a courtesy call on the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Urban Development the Hon. Philip Davis, on Thursday, January 21, 2016.
Ms. Brown was among other officials participating in the 4th Annual Arbitration and Investment Summit-Caribbean, Latin American and other Emerging Markets, which opens Friday, January 22 at the Harry C. Moore Library, College of The Bahamas (COB). Also present was the Hon. Arnold Forbes, Minister of State in the Ministry of Works and Urban Development and Dr. Peter Maynard, head of the Law Department at the College of The Bahamas.
The two-day summit will cover topics including “Maritime and Cruise ship Arbitration: Making Waves”; “Financial Services Trade and Commercial Disputes: Arbitration as an effective ADR Mechanism”; “Opening up of Cuba and the Region; Investment Arbitration: What does the Future hold for The Bahamas, Cuba and other Emerging Markets?”
The Hon. Hope Strachan, Minister of Financial Services and Investments leads the list of speakers. Other participants are: Dr. Alexander Belohlavek, past president of the World Jurist Association; Dr. Franklin Hoet Linares, president, World Jurist Association; Hon. Xhezair Zaganjori, president of the Supreme Court of Albania; John M. Ohaga, chairman Sports Disputes Tribunal, Kenya; Rocio Digon Counsel International Court of Arbitration, International Chamber of Commerce and Edison Sumner, chief executive officer the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce.
Participating stakeholders include: the World Jurist Association, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Peter Maynard Counsel and Attorneys, The Law Department of College of the Bahamas, the Arbitration Committee of The Bahamas Bar Association, the Organization of Commonwealth Caribbean Bar Associations, and the Bahamas Institute of Financial Services.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the government has taken a strong interest in promoting the arbitration process as one of the alternative ways of resolving many of the complex issues that arise particularly in commercial activities.
“We want to offer that not just to our own citizenry but to the world,” he added.
The American Bar Association was formed in 1878 and has a membership exceeding 400,000 lawyers.
