Nassau, Bahamas – Angry workers of Cabbage Beach have shutdown the Sir Sidney Poitier Bridge this afternoon demanding a reopening of access to the beach.

The move came today and has brought chaos to the East Bay Street corridor.

Cabbage Beach, which is adjacent to the Riu Paradise Island Hotel, has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with Bahamas Taxicab Union officials last year. They warned that the decision to close the property could adversely affect scores of drivers.

Some believe Atlantis, which sells beach access to its property, wants to deny locals and guest public access.

Late last year signs attached in the area of the access to the sliding metal entry gates to the path suggested that people will no longer be permitted access to the beach over the privately-owned land, which is scheduled for development.

The government has been silent on the matter and some believe have agreed with the closure. Vendors could organize a major March on Parliament this Wednesday delivering serious problems for the Christie Government is planned to debate the Proposed Constitutional amendments.
