PLP newly elected chairwoman Hon. Glenys Hanna-Martin.
Nassau, The Bahamas – Glenys Hanna-Martin was elected chairwoman of the Progressive Liberal Party at the 50th convention of the party. PLP delegates resoundingly supported Mrs. Martin on Thursday as the outgoing chairman Raynard Rigby announced his intent to not seek re-election to the party chair.
Also contesting the chair post were Omar Archer who secured 14 votes in the delegate race. Oil executive Elcott Coleby received 299 votes, whilst Martin received 423 votes from delegates.
In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Martin thanked members of her party for their overwhelming support to her candidacy.
“Fifty years ago women didn’t have the right to vote, but today I stand here as national chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party. Tonight I pay tribute to all those women who came before me – all those women who took to the streets demanding the right to vote 50 years ago.” Mrs Martin said.
“I pledge to uphold the principles upon which this party is founded. And to travel nation-wide, engaging the young and the old, getting the message out for the party,” the chairwoman said.
