“As of Friday July 22, 2016 the Turks and Caicos has recorded 5 cases of Zika Virus. Three of these cases are associated with a recent history of travel to areas where cases of Zika have been reported. The other two are being investigated.”

Zika has no vaccine and is a threat to pregnant women whose babies can be born with microcephaly and there has been a spike in the neurological disease Guillain-Barre syndrome.

The CDC says there are lots of uncertainties as it relates to Zika and pregnancies including no confirmation on how the virus affects; likelihood of transmission from infected mother to unborn baby; clarity on when in the pregnancy infection may harm fetus and it is unknown whether sexually transmitted Zika affects the babe in the belly.

The Turks and Caicos is no longer Zika-Free.

Take the usual precautions says the Ministry.
