A fire burns in the five-star Atlantis hotel, which was set to open later this month and currently has no guests in it, on the man-made Palm Island in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008. Firefighters have been battling flames in the lobby of the five-star hotel on the artificial island which was built in the shape of a palm tree, but the cause of the fire is not yet known.
The large arched entrance to the Atlantis hotel, the flagship resort on Dubai’s man-made Palm Jumeirah island, is seen after a fire broke out September 2, 2008. The fire at the hotel, which is expected to open later this year, broke out on Tuesday morning but has since been extinguished with little damage to the building, witnesses and fire fighters said. Rising up from the centre of Dubai’s first palm-shaped island, Atlantis is the brain child of Sol Kerzner and is the sister hotel of the Atlantis in the Bahamas.
