Eight new BORCO Scholars

BORCO SCHOLARS.  Bahamas Oil Refining Company International Limited, BORC, announced recently four new scholarships to the College of The Bahamas and four to universities abroad.  Above left is Kendolyn McDonald and right, Shabeth Rolle who are attending the College of the Bahamas.  Centre left is Nikero Barbes, studying at SUNY Maritime College, and right Cyril Fountain who is at Tufts University.  Bottom left is Tareco Johnson now studying Industrial Engineering at Kettering University; and right Trenica Rolle matriculating at Virginia Commonwealth University towards a degree in Bio-Medical Engineering. 

   

FREEPORT, Grand Bahama: An additional eight Bahamian students are now matriculating at colleges and universities here and abroad after been selected as recipients of scholarships from the Bahamas Oil Refining Company International Ltd.
Mr. Juan J. Ahumada, President of BORCO, announced recently four new scholarships to the College of The Bahamas and four to universities abroad in the amounts of $3000 and $7500 respectively, bringing to 28 the number of scholarships BORCO is now servicing, 13 at COB, one at Success College, and 14 at overseas institutions.  Included in the group is an annual scholarship awarded to the child of a BORCO employee.
Max Sweeting, vice president of BORCO noted the company’s keen interest in continuing the programme “As it has benefited so many students, and BORCO, over the years.
“Several of our students having completed their studies are now employees of BORCO, and we’re pleased that their areas of study allowed them to return to us at BORCO,” said Mr. Sweeting.
The BORCO Scholarship Selection Committee Chairperson, Mrs. Jocelyn Malcolm, revealed that some 153 applications were received for study in the fields of Accounting, Engineering, Computer Science, Natural Science, Economics, and Business.
Awarded two-year scholarships to the College of The Bahamas are, Kendolyn McDonald of Bishop Michael Eldon High School, Freeport, who will pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering; Delkisa Wood of Abaco Central High School who will study Psychology; Lakesha Albury of St. John’s College, Nassau, who will study Biology/Chemistry; and Shabeth Rolle of Prince William High School, Nassau who will seek a degree in Spanish/Education.
Pursuing Baccalaureate Degrees overseas are Jade Pratt of St. Andrew’s School, Nassau who will study for a degree in Chemistry (Chemical Engineering) at Ithaca College, New York; Cyril Fountain also of St. Andrew’s School who will study at Tufts University, Maryland toward a degree in Mechanical/Chemical Engineering; Tareco Johnson of Grand Bahama Christian Academy, who sill study towards a degree in Industrial Engineering at Kettering University; Trenica Rolle of Sunland Baptist Academy will matriculate at Virginia Commonwealth University towards a degree in Bio-Medical Engineering; and Nikero Barbes of Bishop Eldon High School, son of BORCO employee Livingstone Barbes, who attends SUNY Maritime College pursuing a degree in Marine Transportation.
The BORCO Scholarship programme began in 1991 with 10 scholarships to the College of The Bahamas and four international.  Since its inception the company has service an average of 20 scholar-ships annually.
