Freeport, Grand Bahama — Breaking News coming into our newsroom confirms some 70 workers at the Hutchison Operations on Grand Bahama were fired today following a mass downsizing exercise at the company.
Sources on Grand Bahama deep in the belly of the operations tell us, workers at the Airport, The Container Port and Hotel operations have been axed.
Senior officials at Hutchison tell us, the mass downsizing exercise is a result of poor business in the Grand Bahama operations, which are also battling with heavy operational costs.
We can tell you at the company’s Container Port division many of the axing came from the Engineering and Operations department at that facility. We can also confirm many of the workers axed were employees who were at the Container Port since its introduction to Grand Bahama 15 years ago.
The shocking news has hit observers of the poor economic situation on Grand Bahama like a category 5 hurricane. We are told the economy of Grand Bahama is getting no better as some 60 percent of the residents on that island are without electricity supply.
