A group of disgruntled employees at the Department of Immigration recently reported to the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) that some 2,000 illegal immigrants to The Bahamas are, in short order, to be secretly regularized as Bahamian citizens.

As an advocate for ensuring that the law is adhered to, the DNA also believes in making our leaders accountable, protecting our borders, boosting our deflating economy and, most importantly, putting Bahamians first. Therefore, the DNA is demanding a statement from the present administration on this issue.

The leader of the DNA and Member of Parliament for Bamboo Town, Branville McCartney said: “We want the government to let us know how many persons have been regularize in the past year and whether they are attending the classes established while I was the Minister of State for Immigration, which would have ensured that person applying knew and could speak English, knew The Bahamas’ National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance, had an appreciation for and knew the Bahamian culture, our national heroes, our parliamentary process and various other vital aspects of our country.”

According to news reports, members of the Opposition share our view that the swearing in of persons seeking citizenship “behind closed doors” should discontinue and be made public.

At a time when Bahamians are desperate for a change, our leaders can not afford to disappoint, particularly when their overall performance has been just that—disappointing. The DNA shares the Bahamian sentiment that lawmakers should adhere to the law of the land and, in doing so, do what is best for this country. If such illegal regularizations are conducted, this is not only illegal and undemocratic, but a direct threat to our Bahamian society.

We, the Bahamian public, deserve a quick response. Whether that includes an admittance or denial, the present administration should and must conduct a full investigation into the matter to the satisfaction of the Bahamian public, whom they serve, first and foremost.

  1. As woman, I am very concerned. One thing I can’t get out my mind is how those Haitian men were raping the women after the earthquake in Haiti. The whole prison was empty, all the criminals managed to escape during the earthquake. I hope Brent them didn’t gone and regularize any of those criminals. I wonder if they is take their fingerprint when they regularizing them, this is so creepy.

  2. THIS IS THE ONE TIME WHEN ALL OF THE OPPOSING PARTIES MUST JOIN FORCES ON THIS ISSUE. FIGHT FOR THE GENERATIONS YET BORN, FIGHT FOR MY CHILDREN YOUR CHILDREN OUR CHILDREN. THEIR FUTURE DEPENDS ON IT!!! HOW COULD OUR GOVERNMENT GIVE CITIZENSHIP TO PERSONS IN ORDER TO TRY AND WIN AN ELECTION????THIS MESS IS GIONG TO BACKFIRE!!!!MARK MY WORDS!!!!!

  3. CORRUPTION!Is the chaarge that will be brought against ALL members of the present government who participate in undermining Bahamian national sovereignty in this mass giveaway of CITIZENSHIP to persons who have no Constitutional claim to receipt of our most prized asset!!!

  5. The Prime Minister and the Minister responsible for immigration, Mr. Brent Symonnette have to answer to the Bahamian people about this foolishness. I am an FNM but I cannot support what is going on in our country. They sold B.T.C. to foreigners, they let the AGA KHAN go in the National Marine Park in Exuma and do what he want and through all of that i was silent and sided with the P.M. But now they want to practically give away our precious land to people who sneak in here on boats and us REAL BAHAMIANS have to work hard just to pay rent. This is the height of corruption by our leaders. I don’t think PAPA will get my support this time around.

  6. The LORD know “we need Change,” it can’t be right for the governing Party of the Bahamas, the Foreign Nationals Mess to be conspiring to win the next General Election big and bold as that. We need the Lord our God to fight this devil called Ingraham, Symonette and the F N Mess we find ourselves in.
