Woodcock Primary students were all smiles on Wednesday, June 8, as the U.S. Embassy’s Volunteers celebrated the close of the 2010-2011 academic year and the “Read to Lead” program with an “Eats and Treats” event.  The festivities included ice cream and cookies for students and staff, thanks to the generous support of Nassau Dairy Products Ltd. and Phil’s Food Services Ltd.  The event was a way to celebrate the students’ commitment to reading and to give back to the community by marking the end of the academic year.

For the last six years, U.S. Embassy volunteers have traveled to Woodcock Primary School each week during the school year to read to students for 30 minutes as part of the Ministry of Education’s national “Read to Lead” program.  The successful reading program has helped Bahamian children across New Providence and The Family Islands to develop a love for reading, while also proving to be a rewarding experience for the committed U.S. Embassy volunteers.
